Jason Polins

I am a professional artist and dedicated teacher with years of experience in painting and drawing. Over my career, I’ve helped hundreds of students discover their unique artistic voice and overcome creative challenges. My courses are thoughtfully designed to improve your problem-solving skills, build confidence, and take your creative expression to the next level, no matter your current skill level.

I graduated from Boston University’s Visual Arts Program and attended the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy. After graduating, I returned to Boston to pursue direct studies with notable painters such as Nelson Shanks and Gary Hoffmann, who remain my mentors and friends.

For the past 24 years, I have taught in-person painting and drawing classes, primarily from my studio, Polins Atelier. I have also taught at several universities and numerous art centers. After many years of teaching in person, I wanted to reach a larger audience. These courses are my effort to offer the opportunity to learn from me through a variety of new methods!

INTRODUCTION TO COLOR THEORY

Explore the foundational concepts of color theory, starting with the color wheel and its structure. You’ll learn about primary, secondary and tertiary colors (combinations of primary and secondary). Understanding how colors relate to one another forms the foundation for creating harmonious and dynamic compositions in your artwork.

INTRODUCTION TO GRAPHITE DRAWING AND MATERIALS

This module introduces you to representational graphite drawing and the abstract nature of mark-making. You’ll explore the history of graphite, the evolution of the pencil, and essential tools like erasers, stumps, and paper—gaining a solid understanding of materials and their expressive potential.

COLOR HARMONIES AND MOOD

Various color harmonies, such as complementary, analogous, and triadic color schemes, will be explored, showing how they can create balance and contrast in your work. You’ll discover how different color combinations evoke specific emotions and moods, enabling you to make intentional color choices that resonate with viewers and reinforce the message of your artwork.

DRAWING FUNDAMENTALS AND TECHNIQUES

Here you’ll learn core drawing concepts such as lines, hatching, value, and both additive and reductive methods. You’ll begin practicing control over your tools, learning how subtle shifts in pressure and technique lead to more precise, intentional drawing.

CHOOSING A SUBJECT AND COMPOSITION BASICS

COLOR MIXING AND APPLICATION

Blending tools and pressure control are also introduced to help you create smooth, cohesive drawings with a strong sense of dimensionality.

PRACTICAL PROJECTS AND APPLICATIONS

Apply color theory principles through guided exercises and a personal artwork project. By integrating color mixing, harmonies, and the psychological impact of color, you’ll create visually engaging and expressive pieces that solidify your understanding and boost your confidence in using color as a key element of your artistic expression.

APPLIED DRAWING PROJECTS

In the final module, you’ll apply your skills through structured projects—starting with geometric forms and progressing to subjects like nature, faces, and figures. These exercises reinforce technique and composition, helping you finish confident, well-observed graphite drawings.
