I created this course for artists of all backgrounds, whether you’re an absolute beginner or someone with painting experience looking to refine your understanding of color. In this course, you’ll learn to unlock the secrets of color harmony, contrast, and balance, using gouache as a versatile and dynamic medium. Together, we’ll explore how to observe and interpret the world’s colors to bring your artwork to life.

I am a professional artist and dedicated teacher with years of experience in painting and drawing. Over my career, I’ve helped countless students discover their unique artistic voice and overcome creative challenges. My courses are thoughtfully designed to improve your problem-solving skills, build confidence, and take your creative expression to the next level—no matter your current skill level.
I graduated from Boston University’s Visual Arts Program and then attended the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy. After graduating, I returned to the Boston area to pursue direct studies with notable painters such as Nelson Shanks and Gary Hoffmann, both of whom remain my mentors and friends.
For the past 24 years, I have been teaching in-person painting and drawing classes, primarily from my own studio, Polins Atelier. I have also taught at several universities and numerous art centers in my area. After many years of teaching in person, I wanted to reach a larger audience. This course is my effort to offer the opportunity to learn from me through a variety of new methods!
Moved by the beauty of nature and our modern world, my genres of expertise include portraiture, figure, still life, and landscape/cityscape. I work in graphite, charcoal, and oil paint.
Outside of Polins Atelier, I also teach art classes in oil painting and drawing at several local art centers.

You will be able to navigate the concepts of hue, value, chroma, and temperature, and understand how to apply these elements to create balanced, dynamic color schemes in your artwork.

INTRODUCTION TO COLOR THEORY
Explore the foundational concepts of color theory, starting with the color wheel and its structure. You’ll learn about primary, secondary and tertiary colors (combinations of primary and secondary). Understanding how colors relate to one another forms the foundation for creating harmonious and dynamic compositions in your artwork.
COLOR HARMONIES AND MOOD
Various color harmonies, such as complementary, analogous, and triadic color schemes, will be explored, showing how they can create balance and contrast in your work. You’ll discover how different color combinations evoke specific emotions and moods, enabling you to make intentional color choices that resonate with viewers and reinforce the message of your artwork.
THE PSYCHOLOGY OF COLOR
This section examines the psychological impact of color in visual art, focusing on how specific colors can influence human emotions, perception, and behavior. Understanding the emotional weight of color will help you use it as a powerful storytelling tool, allowing you to create more expressive and impactful pieces.
COLOR MIXING AND APPLICATION
Practical techniques for mixing colors will be covered, including how to blend paints to achieve a wide range of hues and shades, control color temperature, and create smooth transitions. THE ROLE OF LIGHT AND SHADOW IN COLOR
